LOOKING AHEAD: FESTIVAL 2007

New this year, our Sunday Twilight Concert will feature local fan favorite, The Heartbeats. That concert will be held from 6 to 8 PM on the steps of the CPA (Park Avenue side).

The concert is FREE.

Other performers you will be able to enjoy at the festival this include Sage, Nitecry, Steve Czarnecki and Wally’s Swing World, Really Joel, Monkey and many others. On Sat. and Sun. the South Bay Guitar Society will provide a diversity of guitar and other sounds on the classical/guitar stage.

Festival arts and crafts include fun and functional ceramics, unique clothing and jewelry, paintings, sculpture, prints, as well as fine works of leather and wood. The works displayed in this event focus on high quality, originality and a bit of whimsy.

ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS

Our spring arts education programs just finished and now we are gearing up for our summer classes. This summer we will provide arts residencies to children at Tierra Encantada, Sacred Heart Community Center, Muriel Wright facility and the Migrant Education program at Horace Mann Elementary School.

This Winter we will once again be bringing our very successful World Moves multicultural dance project to 5 local elementary schools: Escuela Popular, Windmill Springs, Horace Mann, Jeanne Meadows Elementary and Luther Burbank. The final performance will take place December 13th at the Montgomery Theatre in downtown San Jose.

We recently formed an arts education advisory committee to help us keep our fingers on the pulse of the community we are serving. The arts education advisory committee meets quarterly and is tackling issues such as arts education advocacy, effective marketing of our existing school-based programs and development of future projects. Committee members are: Charlotte Powers (chair), Vicki Fernandez, Diana Hollinger, Dr. Charles Parchment, Donna Pope. Tapestry staff liaison are Teresa Chavez Delgado (vice-chair) and An Lu (executive director). Ad hoc committee members are Angela Kirkner and Henry Use.

ARTS EDUCATION COURSE CATALOG

Tapestry Arts Course Catalog (pdf)

Tapestry Arts now has printed its first edition of the Tapestry Arts Education Course Catalog. The catalog lists classes, Framework connections and arts instructor biographies. This catalog can be used by classroom teachers to order arts residencies for their students. It is also an excellent reference for parents who are interest in finding arts programs to bring into the schools.

The catalog alphabetically lists currently available programs for first through eighth graders. If you are interested in a program that is not listed, we would be happy to make arrangements to meet your students’ needs. We want to bring more arts into the school curriculum to enrich the lives, enhance the learning and nurture the creativity of every student in our community. It is imperative to foster a greater appreciation for the importance and availability of arts education programs in our students’ lives.

The Tapestry Course Catalog is made possible by grants from Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with Adobe Systems, the Adobe Foundation Fund at Silicon Valley Community Foundation, and the City of San Jose.

TAPESTRY BOARD AND STAFF UPDATES

Tapestry is pleased to announce the election of a new member to its board of directors: Richard Patterson is employed by Santa Clara Valley Medical Center as the coordinator for peer support services for persons with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Richard enjoys giving back to his community. He trains peer counselors, facilitates support groups and speaks to local high schools focusing on at risk behavior. Richard said that he “is excited to join Tapestry's Board and is interested in serving the interest of those who attend the annual Tapestry Arts Festival and the children who benefit from our arts education programs”.

Our long-time festival artists coordinator, Roberta Rinde, retired after last year’s festival. We were sad to see her go but we wish her well and thank her for her years of tireless work and look forward to continuing seeing her at Tapestry’s events. After a comprehensive search, we found a new coordinator: Jeanne Jehnsen. Jeanne is passionate about expanding education in the arts and humanities areas, so joining Tapestry Arts proved a natural choice for her! When not juggling artists or brainstorming ways to target markets most effectively, she writes creatively for her own pleasure and as a freelance writer. She also participates in various improvisational theater troupes as well as a historical re-enactment group, and hopes to complete her Literature degree in the near future.

RECENT GRANTS AWARDED TO TAPESTRY

Tapestry has been awarded a grant in the amount of $15,000 by Cisco Systems San Jose Impact Grant Application in support of “World Moves”, our multicultural dance residency project.
