Location Description: |
San Jose is
the largest city in Northern California and 10th largest in
the nation. It is the “epicenter of information
technology with about 1,500 of the nation’s 2,500 largest
electronics firms” (Fortune Magazine) and is known as the
Capital of Silicon Valley. San Jose is the most affluent
market on the West Coast and 3rd nationally in effective
household buying income. Tapestry Arts Festival is held
on the streets of downtown San Jose. |

Event Description: |
Tapestry is a
public benefit arts organization founded in 1976 that provides
opportunities for the community to interact with the arts.
Each Labor Day weekend Tapestry produces San Jose’s oldest and
largest community event, Tapestry Arts Festival. The
festival, which is recognized as one of the premier events of
its kind in the country (ranked #2 on the West Coast), is a
three-day celebration of the visual and performing arts held
in downtown San Jose. Crowds estimated at over 150,000
view the works of 150 artists from around the country, enjoy
non-stop entertainment from four stages and sample food from
over 30 food booths. Festival features: the
Creativity Zone where local artists assist children and their
parents at no charge in creating their own art and the
indoor Design for Living Home & Garden Show. |

Proceeds from
the festival are used throughout the year to fund arts
education programs in local schools and arts outreach to the
community. Tapestry’s programs include partnerships between
Tapestry artists, educators, schools, community centers,
alternative learning sites and shelters. Examples of
programs include:

World Moves
- Multicultural dance residencies in local elementary
schools. Students learn dance, music and culture of
different ethnicities

Sacred Heart
Community Center - Academic summer camp and after school
program

San Jose
Migrant Education - Artists teach visual art, poetry, dance
and music in a summer program to promote literacy for
children of low-income families
