30th Annual Festival a Resounding Success

Held over Labor Day Weekend 2005, the 30th Annual Tapestry Arts Festival was a huge success. The festival drew an estimated 175,000 attendees this year. We had great weather, wonderful artists, good crowds and bands for every musical taste. Festival arts and crafts included fun and functional ceramics, unique clothing and jewelry, paintings, sculpture, prints, as well as fine works of leather and wood. The works displayed focused on high quality, originality and a bit of whimsy.

Music on the four stages had a little something for everyone from rock to country to jazz and blues. Once again the South Bay Guitar Society provided high quality performances on the Guitar and Classical Stage. On Sunday evening, The Joe Sharino Band delighted a large, enthusiastic audience during our twilight concert.

Arts Education and Outreach Programs

Since 1990 Tapestry has been providing arts outreach and arts education programs. During this past year we held a total of more than 100 classes in sites throughout San Jose and then surrounding community. This Fall we provided classes in drama, visual art, Chinese dance, music, photography and poetry. The Chinese dance residency was conducted as part of a Chinese immersion program at Lawson Elementary School in Cupertino. In addition to Lawson school, our Fall programs were held in cooperation with San Jose Afterschool and CORAL (Communities Organizing Resources to Advance Learning).

In the Spring of 2006 we will once again conduct our World Moves project. World Moves is a 10 week multicultural dance residency which concludes with a public performance. In 2006, five schools will be participating in World Moves and the performance will be held on April 6th in the Montgomery Theatre in San Jose.

Board of Directors updates

Board member Colleen Head has been elected to the role of board president. Colleen succeeds Fernando Hernandez who served as president for the past two years. Our thanks to Fernando for his leadership and service and to Colleen for accepting her new role. Recently appointed to the board are two new members, John DiLoreto and Carol Ann Martin. We extend a sincere welcome to both. We are also saying goodbye to long-time board member Gloria Chun Hoo. Gloria has been on our board since 1993 and is moving to Hawaii to assume a new position. Our staff and board sincerely thank Gloria for her invaluable guidance and support and wish her well in her new endeavor.

Save the date: March 11, 2006

We will be holding our annual fundraising auction on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Jose. Each year many of the artists who participate in our festival, donate original works of art and craft to be auctioned in addition to dining and travel packages and more. Watch your mail for details. The auction raises funds to support our arts education programs – it’s a good time for a great cause!

From the Director

Tapestry had much to celebrate in 2005: the successful production of our 30th annual festival, the delivery of arts education programs to more than 3500 students and the addition of four new members to our board of directors. Tapestry began as a grass-roots celebration of the arts in 1976. Since that time we have grown and evolved in response to the cultural needs of our community. As we move into 2006, arts education is at the forefront of our strategic planning. Tapestry’s staff and board are committed to meeting the demand for arts programming, filling the void left by the decline of arts in the schools. The sound success of our annual festival, coupled with our auction and other fundraising efforts are invested in our programs for children who have limited access to the arts. I am thrilled to be a part of Tapestry as we celebrate our rich cultural past and plan our exciting future.
