world moves

World Moves - November 18, 2004 - What a Success!

This is a 10-week multicultural dance residency program funded, in part by the Valley Foundation and Cisco Foundation as well as Arts Council Silicon Valley, in partnership with the County of Santa Clara and the California Arts Council.

See the World Moves pictures!

For ten weeks students in six San Jose elementary schools were instructed in a variety of ethnic dances. The schools came together for a culminating event on November 18, 2004 at Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose.  This year’s participants include Anne Darling Elementary (Chinese Dance), Windmill Springs (Aztec Dance) , Olinder School (Bhangra Dance) , Escuela Popular (Folklorico Dance) , Sherman Oaks (African Dance) and McKinley Elementary (Greek Dance).

The goal of the program is to teach youngsters about diverse cultures through the universal languages of the arts.  The dance artists teach the students about the history, music and traditions of their ethnicity through dance.  Native musicians accompany the students in their performances and authentic costumes add to the experience.  The schools are selected based on a needs assessment which determines which schools are underserved in the area of dance, which have an ethnic diversity which would benefit from this program and which schools have the physical facility to support the program.  The schools may choose the ethnicity they wish to study.  It is recommended that they select an ethnicity other than the predominant one of the student body.  Lessons are based on the California State Framework for the Visual and Performing Arts and assessed in accordance with the State Standards for Arts Education.

What a wonderful night of cultural dance!  The performance at Montgomery Theater went extremely well and the kids really enjoyed performing for their family members and teachers.  It is hard to believe that over 150 students took part in this great program and were exposed to such wonderful instructors, musicians, culture and history.  The students learned so much about the culture they were studying and were able to understand even more why they were doing certain movements because of the history behind them.  Many of our students were able to bring some of this information back to the classroom and apply to different subjects such as history, social studies and even geography!

The staff of Tapestry Arts would like to thank everyone involved who gave their time to help out at this wonderful event.  Our instructors went above and beyond what they were asked to help make this event great.  Thanks so much and we’ll see everyone in Spring 2006!

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Poetry

This class teaches the elements of poetry and how to express oneself in writing.  Students will learn the different forms of poetry and how to put their feelings down onto paper.  They will also be performing their poems in front of the class and learning to critique poetry.  When this class is combined with another medium such as photography or visual art, the students are able to create wonderful pieces of art with visual and written art.

Multicultural Dance (African, Aztec, Bhangra, Chinese, Folklorico)

Children will learn the dance of a specific country or region. The students will learn the basic dance steps as well as the cultural roots of the dance. Each session their confidence grows with their ability. At the conclusion of the session, the participants present a performance for their parents, friends and community members. At the beginning of the residency, the dance instructors will do a simple “pre-test” to determine the level of the skill that exists in the class. The program is evaluated as the youngsters move from their starting skill level to their ability at the final performance. This is an excellent activity to share with family and friends – the participants are encouraged to teach the dance they learn to someone else.

Chinese Art

Students taking this class will be exposed to the different aspects of Chinese art.  They will learn about the different supplies used in this very interesting art form.  The teacher will discuss the history behind Chinese art and how to create several works of art from paint on rice paper to lantern making!

Choir

In this class, students will learn the basics of music including melody, rhythm, notes and timing.  The children will also be learning to sing choir music and how to use their voice and body appropriately while singing.  The class will end with a performance for teacher and parents.

Hip Hop Dance

In this class students will learn the basics of hip hop dance and the history behind it.  Throughout the class, warm up and across the floor exercises will be done during each meeting in order to keep the students flexible and to learn new steps and practice.  The students will also be learning a dance to hip hop music that will be performed during the final performance for friends and family.

Circus Arts

This fun program will teach students all about the art of being a circus performer!  They will learn how to juggle, walk on a ball and even walk on their hands.  Along with learning different circus skills, kids will learn how to perform in front of an audience and gain confidence in themselves.  This class culminates with a performance for family and friends.

Drama

This class teaches the elements of drama from learning to speak on stage comfortably to costume and stage design and culminates with a final performance.

Multidisciplinary Residency - (African, Chinese, Aztec)

The students taking this class will be exposed to the art, music and dance of a specific culture.  The class closes with a performance for parents, family members and friends with the students performing the dance and music pieces they have learned as well as a display of all art pieces created.

Musical Theater

Students participating in this class will learn all the basics needed for a great musical theater performance.  Children will learn music and choreography from different musicals and perform them in a final performance that will take place during the last session of class.

Photography

Students in this program will learn to see as photographers.  Each child will receive his/her own camera, which they will keep after the end of class. The lessons include photographic basics, understanding art in general, composition, subject matter and lighting.  The class will conclude with a final exhibition of each child’s work.

Visual Arts

This visual art program will focus on the elements of making and seeing art.  Lessons include color theory, composition, basic drawing techniques and using paint among several other things.  The proper use of, and respect for, art materials are also part of the lessons.  Children will learn that art is for everyone, that art skills can be learned and that there are no wrong answers when creating art.
