Tapestry Arts and KGO Newstalk AM 810 present the 33rd annual Tapestry
Arts Festival in downtown San Jose on Labor Day Weekend, August 30th –
September 1st. Each year an estimated 150,000 people come to downtown
San Jose to celebrate the arts. Event times are 10 am to 6 pm on
Saturday and Sunday, and 10 am to 5pm on Monday. Admission to the
festival is free.
A San Jose tradition since 1976, the festival features hundreds of
artists from around the country, an eclectic selection of foods and
“Design for Living” (an indoor home show). Additionally, Tapestry has
a unique component entitled the Creativity Zone. The “Zone” provides
free, hands-on art activities for children of all ages More than 36
performing groups will entertain the audience, on four stages, located
throughout the event. On Sunday, from 5 PM to 7 PM, , Tapestry will
present a free Twilight Concert featuring local fan favorite, Ryze.
At the heart of the festival is a juried arts and craft show. Tapestry
invites the public to explore the work of more than 100 diverse
artists, Festival visitors will see fun and functional ceramics,
unique clothing and jewelry, paintings and sculpture, as well as fine
works of leather and wood. “It’s not too early to start Christmas
shopping,” states executive director An Lu. “You can buy a unique
handmade item from one of our many fine artists”, continues Lu. This
year many of Tapestry Arts Festival artists and crafters will be
demonstrating their work throughout the weekend. Beth Karpas is makes
reversible dolls and stuffed animals based on folk and fairy tale
characters. Additionally, Karpas is a professional story teller. Beth
will engage visitor visitors by making her creations and using them to
tell stories.
Martino Dorce makes watercolor and acrylic paintings. Dorce starts
with a blank paper and begins drawing the image using India ink and a
rapidograph pen. When the drawing is complete, the artist uses a
medium sable watercolor brush to apply both watercolor and acrylic
with water to the picture. Martino pains many layers, waiting until
one layer is dry before beginning another. The designs come from
Martino Dorce’s impressions of his homeland, Haiti.
The four festival stages will feature local headliners this year such
as: “Double Funk Crunch”,
“Aja Vu”, “Wally’s Swing World”, “Busta Groove” and “Sage”. Regional
favorite, San Jose Taiko will perform on Monday, September 1. Festival
music will range from pop and rock to soul and country. Well known San
Jose presenter, South Bay Guitar Society (SBGS), will host a “Guitar
and Classical Stage” on Saturday and Sunday. SBGS will bring well
known regional and international performers to this stage with the
sounds of flamenco, steel, acoustic, and Mexican folk guitar. With the
theme of “something for everyone”, the festival will also feature a
popular local square dance company all three days. “The Single
Squares” will perform from 1 PM to 3 PM each day. The complete
entertainment schedule is available on Tapestry’s website.
New this year, Tapestry Arts presents an “Antique Appraisal Clinic” on
Monday, September 1, from 11 AM to 2 PM, in Ridder Lounge at the San
Jose Center for Performing Arts. This clinic will be presented during
the 33rd Annual Tapestry Arts Festival, Labor Day Weekend. The cost is
$10 for the first item and $5 for each additional item. Each person is
limited to 5 items. Local appraisers Sue Okey and Stephen Turner and
Steven Wayne Yvaska will provide informal appraisals for portable
items china, glassware, pottery, brass, silver, bronzes, clocks,
postcards, jewelry, books,
The festival also fosters a rich tradition of volunteerism. The event
uses approximately 300 volunteers each year. Volunteers pour
beverages, provide information, assist with hospitality and help
children with their arts projects in the Creativity Zone. Critical to
the success of this event are Tapestry’s “key” volunteers. The “key”
volunteers are those individuals who work all three days, all day
long; many of whom also help with Friday night set-up. Many of the
festival’s “key” volunteers have been with the organization 20 or more
years, some have been with the event since its inception in 1976.
There are now multiple generations of volunteers!
The annual festival is just the beginning of Tapestry’s arts
programming. Throughout the year, Tapestry Arts provides arts
education to school-age children, both in schools and in community
centers. This year Tapestry will provide more than 100 arts programs
to youngsters throughout the greater San Jose area. Net festival
proceeds provide the core operating support which makes the
organization’s youth arts programs possible.
For more information about the festival, or about the arts education
programs, call: (408) 494-3590 or go to www.tapestryarts.org.
This program has been made possible, in part, through a grant from the
City of San Jose and the Adobe Foundation Fund at Community Foundation
